If I understand things correctly, we are still on track for communism according to Marx. There is supposed to be a period where things get really bad under capitalism first. It is the rebellion against the hoarding of the wealth by the ultra-wealthy which brings about communism. Or at least that is what I seem to recall from my long ago high school days.

From what I remember, that's Leninism.

Marx merely theorised that under Capitalism, money would continue flowing towards the wealthy until a revolution turned everything upside down, returning power to the people. Sort of like turning an hourglass.

Communism came into existence after Marx and was based on his theories. I think the idea behind it was that they enforced and then held the effects of the revolution by force.
