Discordianism

Postby Chibi » February 2nd, 2014, 6:04 pm

Has any one here heard of it?

It's basically the worship of Eris, the goddess of discord.

You could also say it is Buddhism but with an enlarged sense of humour.

No. Have not heard of it until now.

Is there a point in this, some discussion you wish to spark, aside from name-dropping some strange religion?

Discordianism has been around since at least the 1960s. I prefer its spin-off (more or less) the Church of the Sub-Genius. Neither are supposed to be taken seriously, but some folks play it very straight faced.

There is another closely related organization from roughly the same period, but I am blanking on the name. ("Cacophony Society"?)

Here is the Wikipedia entry on their "Holy Book.

They tend to be the type of people who, the more seriously someone or something takes his/her/its-self, the less seriously they take the individual/object.

I only have a relatively superficial knowledge of either.

To a degree, I am one of those people who take it a little bit seriously. Some of the words of its creators are pretty interesting.

I say it's similiar to Buddhism because Buddhism is all about the illusory nature of identity, and Discordian writings also talk about the illusory nature of order. I find it pretty interesting.

A discussion would be nice, although I don't know what that discussion would be until it happened.

If you are interested in a trilogy dedicated to the discussion of and worship of Eris, you absolutely NEED to read the ILLUMINATUS! trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson. Related novels which you might enjoy are:

Cosmic Trigger
1. Cosmic Trigger: Final Secret of the Illuminati (1977)
2. Down to Earth (1991)

Schrodinger's Cat (Robert Anton Wilson)
1. The Universe Next Door (1979)
2. The Trick Top Hat (1979)
3. The Homing Pigeons (1981)

Hail Eris! All Hail Discordia!

Ah, fellow non-disbelievers .... I love it!

The corrected url for the Principia Discorida is http://www.23ae.com/files/PrincipiaDiscordia.pdf

I knew both Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson slightly (not well), having met them when I was in a bi-monthly discussion amateur publishing association dedicated to the non -ism of Eris named Golden APA (Amateur Publishing Association]. The derivation of the name is obvious from a tale of the goddess Eris. An APA is term from SF fandom, so this took place during the context of science fiction fandom, meaning that we all were SF fans as well as Erisians.

I/We really need one more personality in my/our body. There are currently only four of us.

I'm not sure if any of us ever took Erisianism seriously. I do have a tattoo of the Sacred Chao on my right bicep. Only do this if you want a chaotic life and thoroughly enjoy Chaos. You have been warned.
