inducing hypoxia?

Postby tsd » June 18th, 2006, 3:55 am

okay,
a lot of people recommend this for help with trancing,

but two possibly very simple questions that can be answered quickly,

a) what is it?
b) how does it work?
c) how would you go about it?

ok... there were three... sorry!

Hypoxia is the reduction of oxygen in tissues below levels which are considered to be normal. Hypoxia in which there is complete deprivation of oxygen supply is referred to as anoxia. Significant oxygen depletion can be diagnosed by noting bluish coloring of lips and nail beds.

Your brain starts shutting down and you go into an altered state.

I wouldn't. I've got too much to live for, and I need the little bits of brain I can still scrape together. There are breathing exercises that you can do that will help guide you into a meditative/hypnotic state without depriving your brain of oxygen. Check out any of the million-zillion yoga references online. You can do breathing exercises without becoming hypoxic.

I'm sure there are others here who weigh the costs versus benefits differently than I do. You can get instructions on hyperventiliation or breath-holding techniques from them.

No problem at all. If you don't know, ask!

From a neuropsychological point of view, I must advise against giving yourself anoxia, or at least not overdoing it. Your brain can only go without oxygen for a short while before cellular matter starts dying. Then again, at that point you'll probably notice.

(I hope.)

Notice I never said you were planning on trying it. I only answered the questions as they were posed.

If you want to try something to alter consciousness that involves breathing you should try what is referred to as "the breath of fire."

Step 1: Stand up straight, or lay down on your back.
Step 2: Take rapid panting breaths through your mouth to a count of 20 seconds.
Step 3: Breath normally for a count of 20 seconds(in through nose, slight pause, out through mouth, slight pause, repeat).
Step 4: Repeat step 2.
Step 5: Breath normally, and continue to do so as you examine your experience.
